Earthquake hit Nepal,Sikkim and North Bengal

News by Yala, on 19 Sep 2011

Dear Friends,
Greetings from Kathmandu.

Last night a massive earthquake of 6.8 magnitude hit Nepal, Sikkim and North Bengal. The origin of the earthquake was from Mangan which is in North Sikkim on the way to Lachung and Lachen. Mangan is also the worst affected by the earthquake and we are waiting for the exact report and road conditions there. Some of the hotels and parking area's are slightly damaged so that we may have to change the hotels for our clients.

Road Conditions:
Nepal and Kathmandu: Some minor incidents happened, some houses were damaded. The tremor lasted nearly a minute and it was felt in most parts of the country. The death toll from the earthquake that jolted the nation on Monday evening has climbed to eight.

Five deaths were reported in Kathmandu and Sunsari districts yesterday, while the figure on the casualty list and physical damage across the country was not immediately ascertained. The Home Ministry stated that at least 60 people in the Capital were injured in stampedes while jumping off buildings.

Three people died in the Capital after the compound wall of the British Embassy at Lainchaur collapsed in the aftermath of the quake. Except that everything is fine so far.

Darjeeling - The road to Darjeeling has been damaged between Kurseong and Ghoom and thus travel to Darjeeling is possible only via Mirik. The Toy Train track between Darjeeling and Ghoom is damaged and Darjeeling Himalayan Railway has informed that they will take at least 02 days to repair.

Gangtok - Minor Landslides in and around Gangtok and Major Landslides on the National Highway. The army and Border Roads Organization is trying to clear the roads ASAP (by today evening) so that relief can reach Gangtok and other parts of Sikkim at the earliest. Hopefully the roads should be ply-able soon.

Pelling - Pemayangste Monastery has been slightly damaged and there are landslides in and around Pelling which will affect inter-city movement and
local sightseeing today but should be cleared for travel tomorrow.

Kalimpong - Minor Landslides on the way between Bagdogra and Kalimpong.

We are in touch with all the escorts/guide and clients and all are safe.

Itineraries for tomorrow will be adjusted as per once the road conditions to Gangtok and Pelling are cleared and the same will be communicated to the guests and the file handling executives. We will keep you updated on any new happenings.
